Reefer Madness is a film that confirms every parent’s worst nightmare for their child. It is a movie about how Reefer Addiction destroys the life of its protagonist and kills the lives of others. It warps the notion of survival, and even sends one of the characters into an insane asylum. It only takes one time, and its victims are seduced by this drug that sends them into crazed delight.
The movie begins with a high-school principle warning an assembly of parents about the dangers of marijuana addiction. He tells of how it claimed the lives of two of his students- Bill and Mary. Thus the story unfolds in a mangle of drug emotion between the characters: Bill; Mary; Jack; Mae; Blanche; Jimmy; and Ralph.
Reefer Madness was originally entitled “Tell Your Children”, and was created in 1936. Shortly after, it was taken over by Dwain Esper, who renamed it. The movie was never really a big hit until the early 1970’s, and then it became a cult classic phenomenon. With its undying success, Reefer Madness has recently been turned into a musical.
