MIGHTY MOUSE
In 1942 story man Izzy Klein had the idea for an animal with super powers like Superman’s. His first thought, to use a fly, was eventually changed into a mouse. At the same time however, another super mouse showed up on another comic book. The only thing left to do would be a name change. And so it was, Might Mouse was officially born.
The opera-style Mighty Mouse cartoon began in 1945 with supporting characters, Oil Can Harry and Pearl Pureheart. Also in ‘45, Mighty Mouse became part of the cast in Terrytown Comics which was then published by the company that was to become Marvel. He was a mainstay in this series right up until 1963. He appeared in his own comic in 1946 which continued through part of the sixties. The most recent Marvel series showed up in 1990-91.
Gypsy Life got an Oscar nomination in’45. This was another terrific milestone. As is often the case with these long-lasting characters, Mighty Mouse has had many ups and downs in his career. The latest series appeared in the late ‘80s. In it Mighty Mouse had his original personality back and a secret identity and a good supporting cast. Imagination and good writing can make up for low television budgets sometimes.
