Battle of the Bands
Hoobastank is a post-grunge quartet out of the Agoura
Hills suburb of Los Angeles. They formed in 1994 when
guitarist Dan Estrin and lead singer Doug Robb met at
a high-school battle of the bands. Instead of
competing with one another they joined forces and
enlisted the help of drummer Chris Hesse and bassist
Markku Lappalainen to fill out the line-up for their
new band, thus Hoobastank was born.
Easy Access
While the band sites such heavy acts like Tool and
Alice in Chains as major influences, they decided to
take things on a more accessible route. They tempered
these gloomy elements with the eternal sunshine of
southern California and presto out came the edgy
mainstream sound of Hoobastank.
They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used
To
They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To was the title of their debut self-released album.
Despite it's awkward handle, they 1998 album generated
significant buzz in Los Angeles. Before long the band
was leaving behind their backyard gig past and playing
standard venues up and down the western seaboard.
No Man is an Island
Island Records to notice of the heat Hoobastank was
creating and signed the band in August of 2000. Tours
with the emerging bands Incubus and Alien Ant Farm
soon followed and Hoobastank was delivered to the
global audience.
Golden
When the band's major label debut hit in 2001 it
carried two of their tunes in hit status. "Crawling in
the Dark" and "Running Away" made major play in
airwaves and cable powerhouse MTV. The album went gold
garnering the gang a global gig with stops in Asian
and Europe.
Stinky
Hoobastank's popularity and global success still can't
expain away their dog ugly name. Their moniker has
been dubbed the worst since Psychofunkapus.
Minibike Accident
To reinforce their 2003 release of their second album
they mounted a short club tour, however the trip was
cut short when guitarist Dan Estrin was involved in a
freak minibike accident.
Back in the Saddle
Not to be held down for long, Dan and the band were
soon back on their feet and touring with the
All-American Rejects and Ozomatli for the Nokia
Unwired Tour.
The Reason
The first single from their second album, "The Reason"
was initially available for download from the band's
website. Doug Robb wrote on their website enlightened
the fans about their new single, "A lot of it is about
asking questions or questioning all that people see.
Its not all about religion. "Out of Control" is about
that and about opening your eyes after being blinded
by being devote to anything."
Globetrotting
The band continued its tour of the world by hitching
up with Linkin Park's Meteora world jaunt for the
majority of 2004.
Halo 2
Hoobastank, Incubus and Breaking Benjamin are all huge
fans of the video game, "Halo" and jumped at the
chance to pen songs for the soundtrack to the sequel,
"Halo 2". To top things off the folks at Xbox,
knowing the bands had trouble finding ways to play
during their tour, created a few specially built
portable Xbox units just for these three bands so they
could take on Halo 2 while hitting the road.
