THE GOONIES

The pirate's map, the villainous crooks, the underground caverns, the booby traps, the skeletons, the monster, the lost treasure, and the magic that is…The Goonies. This was one of the long tag lines that Warner Bros. and Amblin Entertainment used to parlay their magical movie onto the masses in the summer of 1985.

THE GOON SQUAD

Mikey and Brandon Walsh are two brothers whose family is being forced out of their home due to new real estate development. The only hope they have is to raise enough money to stop the developers, which seriously doubtful. This is when Mikey stumbles upon a treasure map to loot of the famed 1632 pirate named, One Eyed Willy. The two brothers and their buddies, collectively known as the Goonies set out to find the hidden treasure in order to save their community.

EIGHT-LEGGED FREAKS

Several scenes and partial scenes were shot but never made it into the finished film, most times the omissions have no bearing on the rest of the film however two such scenes do pose a mystery. At the end of the film, when the Goonies are talking to reporters then mention escaping from an octopus and Mouth thanks Stef for saving his life. The scenes that correspond to these two instances were cut from the finished film, leaving a mystery as to what the characters are talking about. The scene where the Goonies encounter the octopus was when they were swimming out to the Spanish ship and Data drives it away by throwing a radio in its mouth. When Stef and Mouth were tied together to walk the plank, Stef offers to share her breath with Mouth. Neither of these scenes appear in the finished film.

8 ARMS TO HOLD YOU

A band called The Goon Squad recorded a track for the soundtrack called, 8 Arms to Hold You. This of course was for the scene where the Goonies were attacked by the octopus. As this scene was cut from the film, no one really knew much about it. However, most everyone thought it had a chance to be a dance hit on its own so it was released as a stand alone 12" record, unfortunately the record failed without promotion and now remains one of the rarest Goonies collectables around.

GOONIES R GOOD ENOUGH

Cyndi Lauper co-wrote and performed the theme song, Goonies R Good Enough. Producer Steven Spielberg has a cameo in the music video.

CLIFFHANGER

The original poster art with all the Goonies dangling from one another as the lead character hangs dearly to a rock ledge was altered several times with the characters in varying orders from top to bottom.

DROID ON BOARD

The model pirate ship seen sailing at the end of the film had a miniature R2-D2 from the Star Wars trilogy hidden on the deck of the ship.

WASH THE SPIDER OUT

The music heard when the Goonies discover the tunnel in the Fratellis hideout by accidentally pouring water down it is the same music used in the film, "The Great Escape" when the Germans discover the prisoners first tunnel by accidentally pouring coffee down it.

RAIDERS

Throughout the film you can see the character, Sloth, wearing an Oakland Raiders T-Shirt. Fittingly so for several reasons, first off Raiders are pirates and this is a movie involving pirates, Raiders of the Lost Ark was directed by producer Steven Spielberg and the film is often referred to simply as "Raiders" but most appropriately John Matuszak, the actor who plays Sloth, was a former Oakland Raiders football player.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

The Goonies was filmed in Astoria, Oregon, Cannon Beach, Oregon, Bodega Bay, California and at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. For trivias sake, this newsletter was written on the Universal Studios lot just around the corner from Warner Bros. where most of the Goonies film was shot.

HAWAII, WHO DOESN'T LOVE HAWAII?

For the last week of filming Steven Spielberg gave the cast very strict instructions which inadvertently made them distance themselves from director Richard Donner. But why? Well this had Richard Donner dismayed and when filming concluded he retreated to his beach house in Hawaii. Well on his way to his house he ran into a frenzied neighbor who took up his entire day, when he finally escaped his neighbor's clutches and arrived home he was greeted by a surprise party with the entire cast. Spielberg had promised to fly all of them there for a party if they promised not to tell Donner, which naturally made them distance themselves from their director.

EVERYDAY SUPERMAN

During the climax of the film, Sloth pulls off his t-shirt to reveal a Superman t-shirt underneath and the Superman theme song rings out. The director, Richard Donner also directed Superman - The Movie.
