One of the oldest sports that is still greatly enjoyed today is golf.
Golf has been around for many centuries. It was in the 15th century that the earliest form of the game was found in Scotland. The players each had a pebble that they would strike around a course that was composed of rabbit runs and sand dunes. They would hit the pebble by using sticks or a rather primitive looking club.
The early clubs were made from different types of strong wood. This included: Holly, pear, apple and beech. The different shafts were composed of hazel or ash. They were quite fragile. A golfer could expect to break at least one during a game. It was also rather costly to make a golf club. This being the case, the game was often associated with the upper classes.
Today golf is a thriving sport that is enjoyed by both the young and the old. It is relaxing and requires a high amount of skill and patience. With the changing of times golf, like most sports, has become a professional game. There are many popular players and courses through out the world. Tiger Woods, a relatively recent phenomenon, has really made golf popular among the younger generation. With his good looks and fantastic skill, he has turned many eyes to this classic sport.
