There are two types of EMT. The first known as an EMT-B (Basic), and the second as an EMT- P (Paramedic). EMT-B are those who can perform basic life saving procedures like CPR. They also assist Paramedics in their tasks. Before you become a paramedic you must first be an EMT-B.

Paramedics are trained to perform certain medical procedures that can prolong the chances of survival for someone who is in need of surgery. Paramedics are licensed to administer certain powerful drugs to those in need. An example of this would be insulin to a diabetic. Paramedics can also perform simple surgeries such as, tracheotomies, needle chest decompression, and tube insertion. It is for reason like these, that it is important to use paramedics. They have the ability to secure a person in critical care. This helps keep the emergency room less hectic in the local hospital. It also insure that person a better chance of survival, because the hospital will be ready to take them when they arrive.
