DOWN
Known as the heavy metal “supergroup” was formed in New Orleans in the early 90’s.
Down made two albums. Their debut, entitled Nola released in 1995, and II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow, released in 2002. The band members are: Phil Anselmo (Vocals), Pepper Keenan (guitar), Kirk Winstein (guitar), Todd Strange (bass), and Jimmy Bowers (drums). Down had been together for four years, before they released their self-produced debut in 1995. Unfortunately Strange was replaced by Rex Brown before the production of their second CD.
There are many forms of metal that can categorize a band. Down’s music had more of a 70’s rock sound. The song “Lifer” from their Nola album was an excellent example of this rock. Down’s music is a blast from the past with a hint of the new forms of metal.
Down, unlike other metal bands, is not in the media eye. Part of the reason is their lack of performance and not producing an album for six years after their first. However, Down is unique for the risk it took. It was more personalized and done the way they liked it, than by following the rules of society. Their rock music is historically bound and metal fresh. Any pure born head-banger can’t help but succumb to their sound.
