DAREDEVIL
Daredevil started out his comic career in April 1964 as part of an outburst of creativity at Marvel Comics. Although Daredevil never quite reached the status and popularity of Spiderman or The Hulk, the comic has stayed in print continuously for more than a third of a century and that is definitely saying something!
Our main character is Matt Murdock who is determined to avenge the murder of his father. The problem is that Matt had made a promise to his father that he would never resort to force to solve his problems. The other problem Matt had to overcome was his blindness, something that happened to him in a bizarre accident that left his other senses superhumanly acute.
Matt decides to create a persona for himself. With his red mask and costume, he could convince himself that he was Daredevil and if violence was necessary to achieve his goal, than violence it must be. His ‘handicap’ turns out to be a terrific strength for him with the super senses that come with the blindness.
The Daredevil comic went through some difficult times in terms of popularity, coming out on top in 1979 when a hot new writer came to the rescue. Frank Miller changed the style into more of a crime series combining superheroes and detectives. The comic was a hit.
Daredevil was the beginning of the darker and grittier style that gained so much popularity in the 1980's and 1990's. It even has a film made in its honor, made in 2003 starring Ben Afleck. Come and join the fun and wear the Daredevil t-shirt!
