COWBOY BEBOP
Cowboy Bebop takes place in the year 2071 when the world has become a dangerous place. Humans are venturing out into space to create new outposts. What happens there is reminiscent of the ‘wild West’ in the 1800's. The two main characters are Spike Spiegel and Jet Black. They spend their time being bounty hunters in the new disorder of the universe. Without meaning to, our busy duo picks up other members for their crew. These new characters aren’t actually that helpful. They are Ein, a Welsh corgi; Faye Valentine, an expert black jack player and small time crook and Edward Wong Hau Pepely Tivrusky 4th, a talented computer hacker.
The series sports superior use of computer animation and excellent storylines. The series is episodic so that it is easy to follow. The character development is not complex either. You get just enough background information on each character. The other refreshing difference of this show is that there are no child or teen characters. Also, different cultures have been included in the backdrops and settings.
No doubt, you are also tuning into the show for its fabulous soundtrack. Yoko Kanno is the composer of much of the music and she does a brilliant job. Borrowing from many genres especially jazz, she pays tribute to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Charlie Parker, Iron Maiden and the Stray Cats.
The effort clearly invested in this series pays off. You can see evidence of the work that has gone into producing the shows and the style is addictive. You will continually be drawn back to this unique japanese anime series.
