CHILLY WILLY

Quiet and cute Chilly Willy debuted in animated short by Walter Lanz back in 1953. In each of his cartoons, Willy is lost or being chased by some starving animal that is determined to eat him. Chilly only cares about one thing: he just wants to get warm and cozy. By the end of each short cartoon, he manages to win out and heads back to his home at the South Pole.

During his journeys, he wears his signature outfit, a red wool hat with a yellow pom-pom and the more traditional tuxedo-like black and white coloring. He walks with a stiff-legged waddle a little bit like Charlie Chaplin. Whenever Chilly cries, he can’t shed tears. Tiny little ice-cubes fall from his sad eyes.

Chilly Willy has made appearances in other cartoons such as Woody Woodpecker and Andy Panda. The last of his series appeared in 1972. Chilly even earned an Academy Award Nomination in 1952 for his work in “I’m Cold”. He can also been seen in the brief series of Dell comics of which there are only nine, published between 1956 and 1962. You need to look hard to find those. Chilly Willy still appears on occasion in contemporary cartoons. We can’t seem to forget this cute little guy. Neither will you if you order one of his ‘cool’ t-shirts.
