CHEERS
What can you say about Cheers that hasn't been said a thousand times already? For years, the show about the bar where “everybody knows your name” was the number one rated show in America. Certainly not doing too badly for a show whose premier was the lowest rated show in America!
Cheers premiered on NBC on September 30, 1982. Sam, a retired pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, is the owner and chief bartender at Cheers. Sam is obsessed with his hair and going out with a lot of women. Coach (a retired Red Sox coach) is another bartender, as is Woody, a country boy with a lot of unusual sayings. Carla is a sarcastic waitress and Diane is a know-it-all waitress. Sam and Diane have an on-and-off relationship until she finally leaves the show. Rebecca joins the cast as the manager of the bar and she and Sam have an on-and-off relationship, but mostly off since she is more interested in a man's wealth than in the man himself. Frasier is a local psychiatrist who is a regular at the bar and tries to help the bar regulars who always ask for his help, as well as himself, with his knowledge. He meets and marries Lilith, another psychologist, they have a child.. Norm and Cliff are regulars at the bar and add a lot of humor to the show. This show was snappy, witty, and hip.
But there is more to it than that. Cheers had a wonderful, indefinable quality that truly it better than the rest. Even in reruns, many prefer Cheers to almost any other new show on the air.
