CHE GUEVARA
THE REVOLUTION WILL BE TELEVISED
Revolution has always been fashionable. It makes the world go round. Even if you have heard of Che Guevara, most likely you’re not sure what he did or what he stood for.
Well you’re in luck, here’s the quick 411 on him that will boost your IQ while you adorn one of these swanky shirts bearing his radical good looks.
CHE AND THE MARX BROTHERS
Born in 1928 with the name Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, "Che" was originally from Rosario, Argentina. He studied medicine and became a doctor. He got things rolling in 1954 when he joined Fidel and Raul Castro in Mexico where they were in exile from Cuba. He helped them plan the Cuban Revolution that ousted Cuban dictator Flugencio Batista.
Having joined Castro’s invading army he became a Cuban citizen when the revolution ended in 1959. From then on, he became a world-renowned leader and close friend of Fidel Castro.
INTERNATIONAL MAN OF REVOLUTION
He earned notoriety after criticizing US foreign policy and rejecting the USSR form of Communism. He became a legend after supporting Communist-Cuban socialism and guerilla warfare throughout the impoverished lands of Africa, Latin and South America.
He was a doctor, a warrior, a leader and a writer - writing a book about guerilla warfare, titled, what else – “Guerilla Warfare.”
PORTRAIT OF THE POET-WARRIOR
That oh so famous photo of him that adorns your t-shirt was taken by Cuban photographer Alberto Korda. Korda was originally a fashon shutterbug but soon joined the ranks of a select few young photographers that tracked the early years of President Fidel Castro’s government after the 1959 Cuban Revolution.
The shot of Che staring stoically from under his black beret was taken at a Havana funeral in 1960. Korda dubbed it “The Heroic Guerilla”. It was the defining moment of his career and galvanized the iconic image of Che for would-be revolutionaries the world over.
Korda, who lived in Havana, recently passed away at the age of 72 in Paris, France.
