BETTY BOOP
Betty started out in the 1930's and yet we still love her today. You might be shocked to learn that Betty didn’t start out so beautiful! She began life as a dog (literally) singer in Dizzy Dishes in August 1930. She was the dog girlfriend for Bimbo the dog. Well, at least she was a french poodle.
Soon, her creators began to transform her into a woman - thins like earring, female legs etc. were added. At least five different women did her singing voice for her. The best known was Mae Questal from mid-1931 through to the series end. Betty was totally human by 1932 while Bimbo remained a dog.
There was a struggle about moral content later on that left Betty a lot more prim. The there was less leg and cleavage showing. The nasty suitors and racier scenes disappeared at the same time. This left her with the lovable character Grampy and her dog, Pudgy to make up all the storylines right up to the end of the series in 1939.
Ko-Ko the clown also co-starred with Betty. The show made a comeback in the 1970's but that fizzled out soon enough. Today, she remains a beloved character. Wear one of her t-shirts to show that you still love her too!
